From june 1997 on I was plagued by belly-ache, a swollen groin and pain in my back and I also grew very thin. Tests in the hospital did not produce a clear diagnosis but in July 1997 a part of my intestines which was infested with fistulas was removed and a drain brought in place. However things remained cumbersome, the back pain did not go and the drain produced a mess. In November 1998 I was hospitalized in the Academic Hospital in Maastricht. For 6 weeks I did not get to eat or drink anything normal, just special food via a probe. Just in time for Christmas I was allowed to go back home. Initially things went "all right" for me during 1999 even though the drain was still there as was the pain in my back. Yet in October I had to go back into the AC Maastricht for another surgery whereby a fistula was removed and a temporary stoma (artificial exit of the intestines) was made. At long last the doctors came with a diagnosis: I suffer from the illness of Crohn.

Still the pain in my back remains and further tests result in finding a huge inflammation which takes another 2 operations to treat it. At last all seems to have been solved and in 2000 I go into the hospital for the removal of the stoma. Alas! The doctors find out that I still have infections of the intestines and send me back home, accompanied by medication and the order to quit smoking. During the May 2001 campaign there has been prayed with me and I literally feel healed. At the end of August it was time for a check at the hospital. All infections are gone and come October the (temporary!) stoma will be removed.
